Kevin, it sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Have you checked the fuel filter? How about the float valve in the carb? Using the choke allows fuel to enter the engine by the "brute force" of engine vacuum, which will let it run for awhile, but not continuously. Running a choked engine too long will also encourage plug fouling. The spark plug gap is checked with a wire gap gauge or a feeler gauge. The gap setting is .031" to .035". Get a gapping tool with the wires and the notch to open the gap if it's too tight. The '86-'88 Clymer manual will work for all Savages; the only difference is the manual does not include the 5th gear in the transmission chapter, because it didn't appear on the Savage until 1995.
